Dear Second Grade Parents,
This is going to be an excellent year and I am looking forward to spending the next 9 months with your children. Second Grade is a year full of activity, growth and challenges, and your children are all still growing and learning, so please be patient with them and remember that this is an exciting time in their lives!

Reward:
If a student is on a green or yellow card at the end of the day they receive a sticker on their chart. At the end of the week if the students have 4 stickers they get to participate in reward time with first grade. On Friday’s before dismissal the first and second grade will have reward time, it will include fun activities for the students ie. Playing outside, playing board games etc.
All About Me (top)
All of the students will be given an opportunity to have a week for the “All About Me” board. This is a fun activity and a way for the rest of us in the class to better know your child. All your child will need to bring are pictures of their family, friends, animals, etc., certificates, ribbons, and anything else that they would like to share with us about them. I will send home the packet with your child and further explanation of what can be done. This will be kept up throughout the week and taken home on Friday.
Our Birthdays (top)
Birthdays are important to all of us…after all where would we be without them?! To celebrate our birthdays we will have a special collection in our room designated as our “Birthday Book Library.” This is a way for you and your child to contribute to their classroom and to the rest of the class by building our library. However, this is a strictly volunteer program. If you do choose to donate a book, it needs to be brand new and can be any kind of book that they choose. Picture Books are my personal favorites to have in our library because they serve many purposes…number one, they can be picked up, read and finished in a short amount of time. No matter how old, or young, we are, picture books are a great way to be given the great gift of a story.
Dress Code (top)
Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for school. Please check the handbook if you have questions regarding the dress code. All other conduct referrals will be at the discretion of the school administration.
Attendance (top)
A successful school experience is the responsibility of the children, the parent and the school. Your child’s progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation. Regular attendance without tardiness is key.
School Work (top)
Please look in your child’s folder each day. I send all school /classroom news by way of your child in their folder. These folders will come home daily and are to be sent back each day. Please send all notes, money and other important things to school in your child’s folder. Any money sent to school with your child should have their name on it and what it is intended to be used for i.e. ice cream sale, cookie sale etc. If the students have $2 and the cost is only $1 they tend to share their money with friends that didn’t bring money to school, please indicate on the envelop if your child is allowed to share their money.
Missed Work (top)
If your child is absent, I will send home any class work/ homework that was missed the day they return. I expect these assignments to be completed and returned. While I do not expect them to be returned immediately, I do expect them to be returned in a timely manner.
After School Pick up (top)
All parents must pick up their child from the alley behind the school or park your car and come into the school yard. If your child will be going home with another parent I need a note from you that tells me who they are going home with, if there is not a note your child will not be allowed to go with anyone else. If your child is not picked up by 3:15, they will be taken to after school care and signed in and you will be asked to pay the appropriate fee.
Math (top)
Students will be studying Saxon Math again this year. We will begin by testing them and placing them at their success level. Each student is sure to find some part of the year challenging in Math but, as long as he/she completes all assignments, no problem should be impossible to overcome. Homework should reflect the students’ best efforts. Students may have Math homework over the weekend due to the spiral affect of the program, but it should never be more than 20 minutes of work.
Reading A-Z (top)
Each week students will receive a new book that is read in class in small groups. Your child will complete extension activities in class. When we are finished with the book in class they will bring it home, please read the story with your child and the books could be kept for your home library.
Word Wall (top)
The sight reading words are words that your child should recognize and read a picture, without sounding them out. We are going to review the words daily. New words are introduced each week. We will look for the words in books, while reading stories, clap, slap and snap as we say the letters and we will write sentences that include the words.
Book Orders (top)
Your child will have the opportunity to order books for your home library each month. The book orders are from Scholastic Books and will be sent home each month. You will receive the instructions on how to order the books online; the books will still come to the school and will be sent home with your child.
Volunteers (top)
I will need volunteers for special projects and field trips. I will notify our room mom when I will be needing volunteers.
Currently I need volunteers during reading time (anytime during the allotted time) from 9:50-12:00. Volunteers can check the students writing journals and help with corrections. If you would rather not work with the students there is still plenty to do. Please let me know if you are able to volunteer any day.
Sacraments (top)
This year students who are baptized will be making their First Reconciliation and First Communion. The students/ parent retreat and First Reconciliation will both be held on Saturdays in February or March. First Communion will be May 2nd. Exact Dates to follow.
And some last thoughts (top)
Please be sure that your children have adequate rest, eat good breakfasts, have good lunches, are in uniform, have the supplies that they need for school and most of all are supported by you. We couldn’t do anything without our parents! If you need to contact me for any reason, please leave a message with the office in order to speak with me by phone or to make an appointment.
I am really excited about this coming year and I hope that your children are too. I look forward to meeting each of you. Your support and encouragement is so important to all of us; thank you!
Sincerely,
Miss McNulty
